Nut free carrot cake is made using apple sauce for a dense and moist cake! Served with cream cheese frosting and perfect for coffee or dessert.

September is like a seasonal limbo here in Berlin. One day it’s fresh and perfect for comfy socks and a big sweater. The next day it’s sweltering and back to wearing as little clothes as possible. The same goes for the cooking. One day you buy lots of ingredients for soup then it’s 30°C the next day and soup no longer sounds like the last thing you want to eat. There is, however, one thing that can bring happiness to this jumble of when-will-fall-finally-arrive emotion, and that is Carrot Cake!

Hello Dollies are easy to make bars! Start with a graham cracker crust and layer with chocolate, raisins, dried cranberries, and condensed milk.

Hello Dollies are one of the best things my mom makes! And since Mother’s Day is this week, I wanted to share this super easy recipe that is just as sweet and full of wonderful surprises as my mom!

First off Hello Dollies are made of delicious layers one sweeter than the next. Start with a thick graham cracker crumb base, add chocolate, raisins, dried cranberries, if you want to go tots crazy add white chocolate chips, cover with condensed milk, and bake until caramel goodness is created. That’s all! I can feel the sugar coma already!

Picking a truffle out of an assorted box is like playing Russian roulette – a nut could be lurking behind that shiny chocolate coating and next thing you know, date night is taking place in the ER.

Ok, I am done being morbid, but you get what I’m saying. V-day is not super easy for those with food allergies, going to a restaurant isn’t always a stress-free situation, and more often than not I can’t have any of the chocolatey goodness since traces of nuts are ever present.  Continue reading

Blood Orange Tiramisu

Blood Orange Tiramisu is a fresh and creamy dessertBlood oranges are in season! I have recently discovered the magical powers of the blood orange. Magic you say? Yeah magic, because they make everything taste so fresh and liven up any grey winter day and trust me we get our fair share in Berlin.

Juicy, delicious, and beautiful in colour, blood oranges have recently found themselves adding their fresh flavour in a chicken marinade, in roasted veggies, as a salad dressing, sliced into yoghurt, as a snack, and most significantly in tiramisu. Typically, I find tiramisu extremely rich and feel there needs to be something to cut through the creaminess of mascarpone and whip cream.  As I stood there mixing the filling, a blood orange caught my eye and well, the rest is history.  Continue reading

Since moving to Germany, I have taken to the custom of coffee and cake in the afternoon. I don’t do it every day, but once in a while it’s a fun thing to look forward to as the work day is slowly wrapping up. Germany has fantastic cakes, from Käsekuchen to Apfelstrudel to Sachertorte they all look fabulous: dense, full of flavour, and cross-contaminants. Which means the bakery is off limits for this allergy girl. Boo. But that’s ok because this lemon yoghurt cake is easy to make and goes perfectly with coffee. And it also makes a delicious and exciting breakfast treat. Trust me it is a sweet way to start the day (pun intended ;P). Continue reading
