Since getting a Vitamix, I have had a green smoothie almost every day. Green smoothies were never really an option for me because I have a weird bunch of fruit and veg allergies, one of which generally shows up in a store bought smoothie (mostly banana, kiwi, or carrot). So, needless to say, I never really got what the big deal was. Well! Let me just say that I am a total convert. Holy cow are they good.
Did you ever see the film The Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan? I can remember very distinctly the love interest, played by Rene Russo, drinking green smoothies and how ewy and weird I thought that was. Mind you I was 10, and that isn’t the case anymore. Now I get it, Rene! A morning without a green smoothie is an anomaly in our house.
Get your green smoothie on!
When we (me and my hubby) make our green smoothies we go with what feels right, and it works 9 out of 10 times. What we have nailed down is that you need something sweet like fruit, something leafy, some type of liquid, and ice. Ice is what makes it fresh and juice-like. We also always put in ginger because we love it, and it adds a nice kick! You can control how much spice you want by the amount of ginger used.
Smoothie vs. Juice
Let’s make one thing clear; this sure ain’t juice. It can be confusing because people like to call it green juice when it is really a smoothie. You are using the whole vegetable, unlike juice where the fibre is left behind. Smoothies are healthier for you because you get the full fruit and vegetable, and it is better in an ‘eco’ sense because you aren’t wasteful (throwing away most of the vegetable).
This green smoothie recipe came out of desperation. I was craving a smoothie and hadn’t been grocery shopping. The few things we had in the fridge were thrown in the Vitamix and smoothie magic happened. It’s beautifully light and super refreshing!
Using a recipe is a good place to start if you haven’t made a green smoothie before, but then I say experiment! You never know what weird combos will bring you that ultimate smoothie joy.
